The cellular jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a reminder of the sacrifice given by the revolutionaries of India in their fight against Colonial rule. Located in the capital city of Port Blair, the cellular jail housed countless freedom fighters who gave their lives for the nation.

The cellular jail is also known as “Kala Pani” which also means “death waters” because the jail was surrounded by a vast sea so that no prisoner could escape. The history of this place is enough to send shivers down your spine.

A visit to the cellular jail is a soul-stirring experience and sheds light on the dark chapters of colonial rule. Many Andaman tour packages include a cellular jail as a must-visit location making it one of the most popular spots in Andaman.

The History of the Cellular Jail

Cellular jail was constructed for over 10 years. It was completed in 1906. The jail was specially designed to isolate prisoners and became a symbol of suffering and resilience. The prisoners were trapped inside the solitary cells so that they were unable to interact.

The inmates went through torture and ill treatments. Some notable freedom fighters imprisoned here were Veer Savarkar, Yogeshwar Shukla, and Ullashkar Dutt. These prisoners endured the harsh treatments and continued to fight for the nation.

The cellular jail became home to many hunger strikes and protests. Today, the jail stands as a national memorial and a symbol of the sacrifices made for India’s freedom.

    Light and Sound Show

One of the main highlights of visiting a cellular jail is the light and sound show in the evening.
